Mechanism of the Generation of New Somatic Compatibility Groups within Thanatephorus cucumeris (Rhizoctonia solani)
Single-basidiospore isolates (SBIs) were obtained from field isolates of Thanatephorus cucumeris (Rhizoctonia solani) AG-1 IC and AG-2-2 IV. Formation of distinctive tufts, a recognized feature of heterokaryon synthesis, was observed, and isolates derived from hyphal-tipped tuft hyphae were obtained following pairings between various strains. Three distinctive types of tufts were formed: the fi...
متن کاملHigh levels of gene flow and heterozygote excess characterize Rhizoctonia solani AG-1 IA (Thanatephorus cucumeris) from Texas.
To date, much of the genetics of the basidiomycete Thanatephorus cucumeris (anamorph = Rhizoctonia solani) remains unknown. Here, we present a population genetics study using codominant markers to augment laboratory analyses. Seven single-copy nuclear RFLP markers were used to examine 182 isolates of Rhizoctonia solani AG-1 IA collected from six commercial rice fields in Texas. Thirty-six multi...
متن کاملThe genetic system controlling homothallism in Saccharomyces yeasts.
There are four types of life cycles in Saccharomyces cerevisiae and its related species. A perfect homothallic life cycle (the Ho type) is observed in the classic D strain. Two other types show semi-homothallism; one of them shows a 2-homothallic diploid:2alpha heterothallic haploid segregation (the Hp type) and another, a 2-homothallic:2a segregation (the Hq type). In the segregants from these...
متن کاملMutation of a heterothallic strain to homothallism.
Upon mutagenesis, a heterothallic alpha-alpha diploit strain mutated to homothallism. The gene confering homothallism is nuclear, recessive, and unlinked to mating type. This gene is not allelic to the HO gene, which is responsible for previously described instances of homothallism in yeast. We have designated this new gene for homothallism as cmt (change of mating type).

N general, fertile yeasts are classified as being either heterothallic or homo’ thallic. Heterothallic strains exhibit one of two alternate mating types (usually designated as a and a! or + and -) with diploidization occurring between cells of opposite mating type only (e.g. a with a! and + with -) . In homothallic yeasts, on the other hand, restrictive mating systems are not observed and siste...
